Humana Obscura is an independent literary magazine that seeks to publish nature-focused poetry and art by new, emerging, and established writers and artists from around the world.
As our name suggests—“obscured human”—we focus on work where the human element is concealed but not entirely absent, aiming to revive the nature genre.
Humana Obscura’s mission is to publish and promote the best work of today’s voices and talents. Our intention is to inspire readers and enrich their lives while providing an inclusive space for elevating the voices, expressions, and creative work of our contributors.
Surprise us, delight us. Haunt us. Make us keep thinking about your piece long after we’ve read it or viewed it.
letter from the editor
It is with immense joy and gratitude that we celebrate the tenth issue of Humana Obscura, our magazine dedicated to celebrating the beauty of nature and our connection to it through poetry, prose, and art.
What started as a humble idea during the early days of the pandemic has blossomed into a vibrant community of creators and nature lovers, bound by our shared passion for the wilderness, the seasons, and the wonders of the natural world and our place in it.
What People Are Saying
“A feast for the eyes and heart. Beautiful.”
— Jenny S., Contributor
“Brimming with lofty and deeply human insights alongside lavishly displayed visual delights that guide us beyond ourselves into an imaginary world of the Muses.”
— Mark H., Contributor
“Humana Obscura, in one word, is FANTASTIC.”
— Natali H., Contributor
“Humana Obscura’s singular magic lies in the balance, the harmony of its words and images. Its generous white space enables the verbal to stand in comity with the visual. Many publications try to get the formula right. Humana Obscura’s one of the few that actually do. As a composer’s son, I think of Humana Obscura as music for ear and eye, a multiplicity of voices, singing with drama and power. I’m proud to be one of them.”
— DICK A., Spring/Summer 2022 Contributor
Surprise us.
Delight us.
We’re looking for work that is subtle, honest, raw, and imagistic with a nature or environmental theme.
