THE WAY A DEER LOOKS AT YOU

through the bare oaks

of Kippenrait Glen

black unblinking eyes

head, neck, stone-grey winter skin

everything about her

terrifically still

as if she knows exactly

what to do with the moment.

Then a scuffle of old leaves, quick hooves.

The pale January sun.

The leap.
